The Algonquin Kid (audio book) by Michael Colby

The true life story of Michael Elihu Colby, whose childhood days at Manhattan’s legendary Algonquin Hotel, may remind you of Eloise: A Book for Precocious Grown-ups (1955). Michael’s charming adventures began in 1946, when grandparents Mary and Ben B. Bodne traded their southern oil fortune for the legendary yet faded Algonquin and restored the hotel’s former glory. Their efforts led to a remarkable renaissance and attracted an overflow of celebrities from the ridiculous to the sublime.

Based on a popular series of articles, Michael weaves a vivid tapestry of encounters with the glittering likes of Broadway’s Noel Coward, Helen Hayes, Angela Lansbury, and Laurence Olivier, and Hollywood’s Marilyn Monroe, Vivien Leigh, Whoopi Goldberg, Peter O’Toole, Anthony Hopkins, and Dick Van Dyke. His kaleidoscopic memoir interweaves witty Algonquin anecdotes with social insights into how the Bodnes turned the hotel into a haven for victims of 1950’s McCarthyism and a home away from home for such Black Americans as Ella Fitzgerald, Roy Wilkins, and Maya Angelou. Amid the hotel’s parade of illustrious figures—some on a meteoric rise, some in tragic decline—Michael found his own place in the topsy turvy world of the Broadway theatre and musicals.

25 chapters. Nearly 200 rare photographs and illustrations, a Bibliography, Appendixes, and an Index.
